Are there health benefits for taking turmeric?
Today, turmeric is promoted as a dietary supplement for a variety of conditions, including arthritis, digestive disorders, respiratory infections, allergies, liver disease, depression, and many others. Historically, turmeric was used in Ayurveda and other traditional Indian medical systems, as well as Eastern Asian medical systems such as traditional Chinese medicine. In India, it was traditionally used for disorders of the skin, upper respiratory tract, joints, and digestive system. (US Department of Health and Human Services)
The use of turmeric does seem to make a difference as far as inflammation in my body personally, but as always do your research and reach out to your health care provider with any questions you may have about the positives or negatives for using turmeric. The US Department of Health and Human Services does note on its site that turmeric may be unsafe for use during pregnancy in amounts greater than those commonly found in food.
Turmeric shots are a palatable way to get turmeric in your diet each day. When I first began adding turmeric to my daily routine, I would add it to a dish or certain food. However, the flavor profile of turmeric can be overwhelming. Therefore, I experimented with different ideas and came up with the turmeric shot that incorporates juice and black pepper. Research shows that taking turmeric with black pepper greatly increasing the absorption rate. Check out the video How to Make Turmeric Shots and recipe Turmeric Shots so you can make them too!
As a huge Dr. Greger fan, I do follow his research. In his daily dozen list, he recommends a 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric each day to help reduce inflammation in the body as well as other health benefits. I have included a few links below of informative/helpful videos at NutritionFacts.org.
