Course: Dinner, Lunch
Cuisine: American, Healthy, Plant-Based, Vegan

Ingredients

  • 1 med onion, chopped
  • 1 15 oz. can black beans, rinsed & drained
  • 1/2 c old fashioned oats
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tbsp flax seed
  • 3 tbsp salsa
  • Burger toppings: onion, lettuce, pickles, mustard, ketchup, avocado, etc.
  • Hamburger buns, lettuce wrap, wrap, or toasted bread

Method

  1. In a large bowl, add the onion, beans, oats, chili powder, turmeric, flaxseed and salsa. Mix the ingredients together (is easiest to use your hands).
  2. The mixture should be moist but not too wet. You can adjust by adding more oats to make it drier or more salsa for moisture.
  3. Shape into patties with your hands, then place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. The patties will hold together better if you include this step.
  4. In a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook the patties for 5 minutes (undisturbed), then flip with a spatula and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes. The patties should be firm and brown.
  5. Place the patties on a bun or in a lettuce wrap with your favorite burger toppings.
